I'm not the greatest at protective styling, I like to change my hair to much to really commit to one style and due to my impending motherhood I'm in need of some easy breezy hair styling. I usually head for braid extensions or my trusty kinky twists (again with extensions) However I am no longer braiding my hair as my follicles just can take it any more! So I have been on the hunt for a versatile protective style for the later stages of pregnancy, labour and beyond. Inspired by Cipriana of Urban Bush Babes, Alicia James and Nap85 I've decided to give mini twists a try.
the twists took about 3 hours to put in, I twisted on dry clean hair that had been de-tangled. I made the twists bigger at the back as that is where my hair is most likely to loc if twists are left for two long. They great think about this style is that is you have to look pretty close to see that they are twists, and you can pretty much style them the same as when your hair loose. After I twisted my hair I wet it down and used Original Moxie Everyday Leave-in conditioner sealed with Jojoba Oil, shock it out and left to air dry. those who want to try this look and are concerned about the strands locing make the twists bigger I found Nap85 video very helpful you can check it out here
yes it's still air drying........

I love this style. I wish I could wear it all of the time but after one day my hair starts to loc so that is definitely a no go. Though I have to say it looks great on you.
ReplyDeletevery lovely 'do! i did this all the time and it was such an easy style. unfortunately i started with long braids and i feel like it makes me look much younger than i am when i have the twists in!
ReplyDeleteridiculous, i know but i'm tired of being 21 and being mistaken for a 15 year old haha :)

Thank you for this. How long do you plan on leaving them in. I think I'll try this for my summer style. Side bar: please proof read!
ReplyDeleteThis style looks great on you! And I think it is a good idea for when the baby is due!
ReplyDeleteHair looks great Belle, how long do you leave them in for though?

I frequently wear mini twists (but not the loosely twisted ones like Cipriana) and I LOVE THEM. I normally wear them for about 5 weeks and they are very versatile. My hair is quite kinky and the back is prone to locking. To avoid this I moisturize with Kimmaytube's leave-in conditioner recipe and seal about every couple of days, I also wrap the twists around my head periodically to keep them in a stretched state which helps with the takedown.
ReplyDeleteNow that I've said that...let me tell you how I messed up with my last set. I started working out on a daily basis and the sweat on my scalp made it itch so bad that I HAD TO WASH IT. I followed Naptural85's video instructions to wash mini twists. Bad idea (but in no way am I blaming Naptural85). I wash the twists when they were 2 1/2 weeks old and then kept them in another 2 1/2 weeks. When I finally decided to take them out at 5 weeks it took days to remove them and I had tons of knots and locs. I lost a lot of hair in the shower while detangling.
I'm sharing this just as a warning. Mini twists are a wonderful, versatile low maintenance style but I believe my mistake was in washing them. Prior to this set of twists I had never washed them and had no issues with removing them or detangling afterward. I hope my experience prevents this from happening to someone else.
I love mini twists but will not be wearing them again for awhile.
thnks anon, I don't plan on washing them nor keeping them in longer than 2 weeks
ReplyDeletevery nice!
