I can not believe that there are people who still think this way. A beautiful woman is a beautiful woman. dark, light, asian, white, relaxed hair or natual or weaved to the point of no return. People need to start to appreciate the diversity in the world, there are so many different ways that beauty presents itself. I can understand that we all have preferences, however a preference does not negate that what you find less attractive someone else finds addictive.Kwentiwa
This doc is very necessary. I'm glad that the women were so open and allowed us to share in their history. Can't wait to see more. Thanks for posting Belle.
"Thank God she didn't come out dark!""Dark-skinned girl just looks plain standing next to me.""I'm not black, I'm Caribbean. I'm not black, I'm Haitian."One would almost think that the people talking weren't actually black. And then a lot of African-Americans believe that things are better in Africa. I'm Nigerian and I can tell you that it's the same thing: many black women prefer lighter skin and many black men want light-skinned women. And so, many women here ruin their skin by bleaching it--or they "tone" it, like that's not the same thing--and most women you know wear weaves all the time, destroy their hairline, and then wonder why you have natural hair. (Nothing wrong with a weave until you try to impose it on everybody.) As if all this wasn't enough, many Africans see themselves as being at the bottom of the totem pole, treating other races well, while treating their own with disdain. We have a long way to go as a race.
I watched this and it just hurt me! It is so sad. I think it's so strange... You think I'm not pretty because of the colour of my skin????? It's so weird and nonsensical. But, you must believe you are beautiful first otherwise the battle is already lost. When someone comes and tells you you're ugly... You should actually be surprised, you shouldn't be like, "I expect it". That's the only thing I was concerned about, their self image. Being dark skinned is amazing. I have smooth skin for one... lol
I think that everyone should watch this, I cried
This made me cry too, it is so sad.We have some deep rooted issues in the black community and its sad that we cant come together on this and try and overcome it. It is a big deal.
I agree with all that has been said above...this is a very big deal and huge problem. I honestly believe that this a problem women as a gender/race of people can either hurt or improve. I feel this way and say it because mothers are the first teachers to their children (with or without both parents in the household). A woman, of any race, teaches her children how to love and treat others. When a woman teaches her children how to love-especially her sons- he can be attracted to a woman of any race because the love and respect he has for the woman will be blind to physical "imperfections"...her character will trump all of what the eye first sees. But if a mother belittles others because of the color of his or her skin, that will be the impression that will remain with the child, not the person's character. We, as a people, must do a better job in the home and watch what we say and do around our youth because that is what they take for golden and in turn do to others.
first, thank you for posting this amazing video. I really really appreciate this because for me this is the biggest problem : racism among black people is even more important than "normal racism". I think thanks to those kinds of documentary and also thanks to tyra banks, things are slightly changing. However, we are discriminating each other about our skin tone, about how "black" we are suppose to be consider as a black person, then it's about the hair: natural hair is nasty, natural hair is not professional, natural hair might be good and I support those nappies.....but it's not for me. and then it's how curly your hair should be...we ALWAYS try to find things to divide us..WHY?
